Halloween Hodgepodge

Trick-or-treat ... when is Halloween?

Okay, it's time for a rant. What is wrong with some communities in Wisconsin (and elsewhere)? Do they not know when Halloween is? It's on the calendar! October 31st, always. Even so, some communities have decided that having trick-or-treat is safer on a Sunday before Halloween. This year Halloween falls on a Saturday. So I thought, great! Trick-or-treat will finally be held on Halloween everywhere, right? WRONG! There are still some communities that have decided to hold trick-or-treat the Sunday before the 31st.

I think this takes all of the fun out of Halloween. Once trick-or-treating is over, many kids (and adults) feel like Halloween is over. Why rush it Let them celebrate on Halloween! Even those who don't care for trick-or-treating should agree this year. Who wants kids at the door begging during a Packer game?

Some communities may feel it's safer if kids are out on Sunday's because there's not as much traffic and it can be held during daylight hours. While that may be true, it can also be confusing. If parents are worried about safety, they'll likely take them to a public TOT event. If everyone held trick-or-treat on the same day, Halloween - October 31st, then everyone would know to watch out for trick-or-treaters that day, no matter what town they went to. That would help make things safer.

Even those people who dislike when kids from another town come through trick-or-treating wouldn't have to worry as much. (I say the more the merrier!) With TOT being held on the same day, there would be less chance of having unknown kids coming to your house. Pumpkin farms, stores and other events wouldn't have to miss out because 'Halloween is over already'.

So, my opinion is, keep Halloween and community trick-or-treating together. Don't end the fun early!
