I want to extend a belated thank you to a few haunts for the hospitatlity and good times given to myself, my friends and family:Spooky Stalks was great again this year. We went on a moonless night which made the Milwaukee County corn maze that much scarier. We finally got to get out to some haunts this season! The staff of HauntedWisconsin.com along with our Biggest Fan contest winner and guest headed out for a night of haunting. Even so, some communities have decided that having trick-or-treat is safer on a Sunday before Halloween. This year Halloween falls on a Saturday. So I thought, great! Hey Halloween freaks, Big Daddy here! Halloween is in the air - especially after today's high is only in the upper 60's. . .MMM can almost smell the scent of cooking pumpkin seeds. . .Been making my way to the usual stores to check out the Halloween merchandise. . . I have endured the funny faces and odd stares when I ask when the merchandise will be out. . .but there are a couple of stores that are already getting into the "spirit". . . Today we upgraded the sites underlying framework to Django 1.1 and fixed the various bugs that cropped up. It's that time of year! Over the past week, I received two email ad's from Grandin Road and The Lakeside Collection letting me know that Halloween merchandise was now available on their websites. Grandin Road is the pricier of the two, but has a nice selection and some decorations I haven't seen elsewhere. They also carry Martha Stewart's Halloween line. October is only three months away, so now is the time to start getting ready for Halloween. No, it's not too early! According to employees at several local Michaels craft stores, shipments of Halloween merchandise will begin arriving tomorrow, Thursday, July 2nd! Hopefully other stores won't wait until late September to bring out their Halloween merchandise, and unlike Walmart, will at least bring out Halloween before Christmas!
According to The Muppet Newsflash, Disney is developing the idea of a Muppet Halloween special to air on TV this fall! You may also be able to dress up as your favorite Muppets character for Halloween this year. Disney is working on a line of Halloween costumes based on the Muppets including Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, and Swedish Chef.
I came across a great site today, Design Bliss, which has over 150 links to free clipart, spooky photoshop tips and other Halloween design resources. Even if you don't have a website, the clipart would be very handy when creating party invitations or cards. Hope it comes in handy!

With October here, the changes have become more noticeable. The leaves turn colors, peoples moods change, the temperature changes, and all the buildings that sit dormant 11 months out of the year begin emitting sounds of horror and thrills as the occupants wake up for another season of scares. This is defineitely a great time of year. Today after work I am going to harvest gourds and pumpkins, that have been changing since spring when they were planted. Kevin Hash is an inspiring young lad at 13 years of age. He went before the Appleton common council and requested that trick-or-treat be held until 8pm instead of the original 7pm to accommodate changes in family lifestyles and daylight savings time. I hope more communities take this into account as well and extend their trick-or-treat times until 8pm when holding Halloween on a weekday. I'm posting this evening with a little sad news from the north. One of my favorite haunts of the past few years, Transylmazeia at the Marion Amazement Park in Marion WI, is closed. A check of the parks website says the park is closed and the business is for sale. They were a very unique haunt, using an actual wooden maze and transforming it into a corridor of haunts. I love watching the many horror movies on AMC as well as TCM (see other post), so after I saw the TCM schedule I checked out the AMC site for their Monsterfest schedule. Their general TV listing schedule doesn't go to far into October yet, so I did a search. I came across news that they changed the name from MONSTERFEST to FEARFEST and shortened the number of days it's on. Fearfest will run from Friday, October 24 through Halloween night. The review crew application had an annoying limitation of 200 characters for any response (and you got an unhelpful "500 Server Error" if you went over that limit). This is the same bug we had last year that got a temporary fix then. Now I put the fix back in place and made it permanent this time.The application should be able to handle as much as you wish to type now. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Good news for those of us who shopped at the Bartz's in Brookfield. While at the Westbrook Shopping Center (E. Mooreland & Springdale Rd.) Andy and I spotted what looked like the Bartz's logo. Unfortunately, Bartz's closed their Brookfield location this year, so anyone who used to frequent that store (like Andy & I) will now have to travel to Greenfield, Menomonee Falls or Wauwatosa... or just find another party/Halloween store to check out. Since the Brookfield location always seemed to have some stuff out right after the 4th of July, I did some calling to find out when their Halloween merchandise will be out. It sounds like it will be at least a couple of more weeks till some items are out. However, costumes are always in stock. :P

Every year, I wait upon baited breathe, for the arrival of the first Halloween merchandise of the season! And every year, to my surprise, it has arrived earlier and earlier. Last year, I began checking for Halloween stuff around the end of July. Fortunately, I was able to find items that began trickling in at the local Wally World, Targea, and Michaels. This year, I had a feeling; call it intuition or a 666 sense. . . But on June 28, I stopped off at the Michael's on hwy 100 and National Avenue . . . low and behold, HALLOWEEN...
According to the Brown Deer and Brookfield Michaels stores, Halloween merchandise should begin arriving THIS THURSDAY (July 3rd)! Johnny has already seen some Halloween goodies at the Michaels in West Allis!! Check out his blog for more updates.
