Review
Ever wonder what the Salem Witch Trials were like? How a chat with Charles Manson would go? Check out the House of Bathory and you could experience these and many other nightmare scenarios. Every turn takes you into a different situation throughout various dark times in history. The dialogue and interaction with the actors make you feel like you stepped back in time. There are plenty of scares along the way. I never knew what to expect the whole way and even to the frightening end which had us running out into the street.
Signage / Visibility / Location
Just about 10 minutes off the freeway by downtown Manitowoc and easy to find with navigation. We had no problem spotting the place since it had three hearses parked out front with various ghoulish decorations.
Wait Area / Line Entertainment
The wait area is waiting on the side walk. There weren’t any live actors for entertainment when I was there, but the hearses had many displays to keep you occupied. The storefront type windows leading to the haunt had displays and music was playing.
Actors' Performance
Probably the best I’ve seen this year. We were taken into all kinds of different eras and scenarios throughout the haunt. Each was heavily acted and each one pulled off their character perfectly. The children acted well, whether they had spoken dialogue, creepy singing or just grabbing your ankle for a fright since touching by the actors was allowed.
Sets Scenes / Props / FX
The interior decorations and props were excellent in taking you into a different world, and there were plenty of them. There was excellent detail from the walls to the costumes. They even added heat and smoke at one point to add to the terror of the situation they were creating which I won’t ruin. Props included a vortex and a cool slide down to another level.
Length
The length was approximately 20 minutes. The scenes they took you to had plenty of dialogue and the haunt encompassed three floors so it lasted and was worth $15.
Crowd Control
There wasn’t much of a crowd when we arrived but they had someone out there communicating with the people in line and making sure things were flowing fine.
Most Memorable Moment
There were many moments I enjoyed but I think the one I loved best was right in the beginning. When a little puritan girl “befriended” us, then when we walked into another room with two adult puritans, she grabbed my wife’s hand and told one of them she was the witch. Which lead to a trial and many frights.
Summary
Overall it was a unforgettable and a truly scary haunt. I wasn’t sure what to expect since the outside felt more like a storefront instead of a house, but as soon as we were lead up the stairs we were taken into a past world. We then moved on through all floors of the building to other worlds and situations. The acting was impeccable and I loved how we were involved in the situations, dialogue and then sent screaming. The House of Bathory is one of my favorites this year and I’ll go back next year.

Review
If you enjoy interactive skit style haunts that make you occasionally jump out of your skin then you’ll love the House of Bathory! This was my first time visiting a Dead by Dawn Productions haunt. They’ve been in the Haunted House business for 22 years now and it really shows. Rooms are very well thought out and 100% original….with the exception of the Vortex room which you’ll experience at just about every haunt these days. (Although I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of walking through a Vortex.) To Dawn’s credit she does add to this Vortex a unique twist I haven’t seen at any other haunt. I really enjoyed the skits found in each room. The acting was superb and the actors were comfortable enough to involve haunt goers in the action. What I really, REALLY liked about this haunt was that regardless of where I was in the group (first, last, middle….) the scares definitely me jump and I’m certain they will make you jump too!
I won’t spoil any of the scares waiting for you at the House of Bathory but the premise of this haunt is a journey through time with each room featuring a unique skit pertaining to a period of history. From the pilgrims to the 70’s and featuring the likes of Charles Manson and Hitler…the skits, costumes and décor for each of these themes were masterfully orchestrated and performed admirably by spirited actors. While this may not be the scariest or goriest haunt you attend you’ll definitely enjoy yourself and experience a few really good scares along the way.
Signage / Visibility / Location
The location of this haunt is located right on the main street of downtown Manitowoc. While the haunt itself wasn’t obvious to me…it’s located at a costume store which by the way has some exceptionally cool decorations…it was hard to miss the 5 hearses that were parked along the street and the ghouls that were patrolling the sidewalk leading up to the haunt.
Wait Area / Line Entertainment
The waiting line is located outdoor so dress appropriately. Portions of the waiting line are located under the store canopies that appear on each of the store fronts along the street. There were ghouls and eerily decorated hearses along the street although I didn’t not get a chance to interact with them
Actors' Performance
The actors were a lot of fun and performed their roles admirably. They were certainly comfortable enough to involve haunt goers in the action. I particularly enjoyed conversing with a few of the ghouls over a game of Monopoly…that is until they nearly scared the crap out of me!
Sets Scenes / Props / FX
Sets are creative with a lot of subtle detail that may go unnoticed if your not paying attention. Particularly enjoyed a few exceptional special effects that made me jump as well as the acoustics/sound of many of the rooms.
Length
It took our group approximately 17 minutes to complete our journey.
Most Memorable Moment
There were several...but I particular enjoyed the very unique and surprising twist to my experience with Hitler.
Summary
If you enjoy interactive skit style haunts, The House of Bathory is a must see! This haunt oozes with imagination and creativity and younger audiences will definitely enjoy themselves as much as adults who crave wickedly creative entertainment.

The House of Bathory has been my favorite haunt for the past couple of years. This year once again it remains at the top of my list. They have always been one of the only haunts left that has an "old school" style haunt. I have always loved the interactions that take part in each and every scene. By doing these interactions, it makes you feel as though you are part of the evil doings that are happening around you. I will warn you they are not afraid to touch you in this haunt. Dead by Dawn Productions chose a history theme for their haunt this year which I have never seen done by any other haunt I've ever been to. From the minute you walk up the steps in the House of Bathory till the minute you exit I felt as though I have traveled back in time to witness and take part in the horrific events that have happened in the past.
Signage / Visibility / Location
The location of this haunt is located right on the main street of downtown Manitowoc. It is very easy to find just look for the Mad Hatter sign that's in the window.
Wait Area / Line Entertainment
This haunt does have an outdoor wait area so with the unpredictable weather of Wisconsin make sure to dress appropriately. They did have a magician for your entertainment while you wait in line.
Actors' Performance
The actors really did an excellent job at assuming their roles of people from history. They all fit their roles perfectly and executed them without any flaws.
Length
It took about 25 minutes to walk the entire haunt.
Summary
Overall, this is a must see haunt. I would recommend it to anyone over the age of 15 just because of the more adult nature of some of the scenes and the scares that wait inside.

This is definitely unique. If you're tired of the same old haunted house, come to this one. Each scene is a disturbing scene from history. The house is very interactive. The actors will grab you, push you into cages, et al. Be prepared. There were also slides, a vortex, and lots of extremely loud noises. I highly recommend this one. The actors were exceptional. It was like being in a very disturbing play.
Summary
Interactive, well done, unique, loud.
